What is a guardian ad litem?
A guardian ad litem is a court-appointed attorney whose job is to represent or investigate the interests of a person involved in a court proceeding.
In guardianship or conservatorship matters, the guardian ad litem may gather information, speak with family members, visit the person involved, review records, and report to the court.
It can feel intimidating when the court is involved, but the purpose is usually to make sure the protected person’s interests are being considered.
