Keeping the Peace (and the Holidays) in a Blended Family: The Importance of Estate Planning

Keeping the Peace (and the Holidays)Hey there, Casey Connealy here from Gaughan & Connealy Estate Planning Attorneys! Let’s talk about a topic that might sound a little dry but trust me, it’s more important than knowing which side of the family is bringing the green bean casserole to Thanksgiving this year. If you’re part of a blended family, estate planning isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s essential.

Why, you ask? Well, here’s the thing: without proper estate planning, people can get unintentionally disinherited faster than Aunt Sue can steal the last dinner roll. And we all know how that goes down in family lore. (Spoiler alert: not well.)

The Perils of Unintentional Disinheritance

Picture this: you have kids from a previous marriage, your spouse has kids, maybe you even have a few together. Your family gatherings are like a beautifully chaotic Brady Bunch episode. But when it comes to estate planning, it can turn into a game of Monopoly—except the stakes are way higher and nobody’s arguing over fake money.

If you don’t have a plan in place, state laws and generic wills could split things up in a way that leaves some kids (or your spouse) out in the cold. And nobody wants to accidentally leave someone without their fair share, right? Or worse, leave them with only a set of antique salt shakers they’ve never liked. With a thoughtful trust plan, you can make sure everyone gets what you intend—without the drama.

Keep the Peace with Trust Planning

Let’s talk trusts! No, not the kind you’re working on with your teenager. We’re talking about trust planning that ensures your wishes are carried out, and each family member is taken care of. A well-structured trust allows you to:

  • Provide for your spouse, ensuring they’re comfortable, but also make sure your kids from your first marriage get their fair share.
  • Designate when and how the younger kids receive their inheritance (hint: maybe not at 18 when they’re still figuring out that a ramen-only diet isn’t sustainable).
    • This article in Forbes touches on aged-based milestones (a practice we use with a lot of our trust clients!).
  • Minimize the chances of squabbles over who gets the house, the boat, or the beloved family dog.

It’s like you’re still hosting the holidays—just from beyond the grave. And honestly, that’s the kind of control we all secretly dream about.

Wealth Management: It’s About the Long Game

Estate planning isn’t just about distributing assets; it’s also about making sure there’s a sustainable plan for managing them. Think of it like meal planning for a big family dinner. You wouldn’t just throw out a bunch of ingredients and hope everyone figures it out, right? (Well, unless you’re going for the “experimental kitchen” vibe.) Similarly, a wealth management plan helps ensure your loved ones don’t end up wondering what happened to their inheritance, and it gives you the guidance you need to keep things running smoothly.

So, if you want your family to keep gathering for those awkwardly competitive game nights and too-much-pie Thanksgivings, it’s time to get serious about estate planning. Trust me, the last thing you want is a family feud—and I don’t mean the fun game show kind.

Give us a call at Gaughan & Connealy, and let’s make sure your blended family keeps blending—happily—even when you’re not around to referee.
