The Estate Planning Tidal Wave: Why Gen X and Millennials Need to Step Up Now

The Estate Planning Tidal Wave: Why Gen X and Millennials Need to Step Up NowThe Estate Planning Tidal Wave: Why Gen X and Millennials Need to Step Up Now.

Adulting is hard enough without adding “write a will” to your to-do list. But trust us, “Avoid Probate” is the grown-up equivalent of “Eat Your Vegetables”—it’s not glamorous, but your future self will thank you.

Contrary to popular belief, estate planning isn’t just for the silver-haired elite. It’s for anyone who wants to avoid unnecessary legal drama, save their family time and money, and ensure their legacy lives on. In other words, it’s for you.

Why Now? Let’s start with the obvious: life is unpredictable. Between pandemics, economic rollercoasters, and Gen Z’s insistence that side parts are out, it’s clear we’re living in uncertain times. That’s why more people are turning their attention to estate planning. Over 60% of Americans still don’t have an estate plan, but in 2023, Millennials led a 30% surge in will creation.

Turns out, thinking about your legacy is easier when you’re not binge-watching Netflix’s “Doomsday Preppers.”

The Gen X and Millennial Dilemma

These generations are in a pickle. They’re sandwiched between aging parents who might need care and kids who think “adult supervision” is a Wi-Fi password. Add rising housing costs and the gig economy to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for estate planning confusion.

Here’s a stat to chew on: 45% of Millennials with children haven’t named a legal guardian in case of emergency. Let’s put that into perspective. Imagine your kids’ college fund getting eaten by probate fees or, worse, custody decisions being made by a distant cousin who still collects Beanie Babies.

The Power of Preparation

Estate planning may sound intimidating, but it’s just a series of steps to ensure your wishes are respected. Here are the essentials:

  • Wills and Trusts: Think of a will as the instructions and a trust as the action plan.
  • Power of Attorney: Someone to handle financial or medical decisions if you’re unable.
  • Beneficiary Designations: Keep these up-to-date! Your ex doesn’t need your 401(k), no matter how much they “love” your dog.

A common myth? If you don’t have a plan, the government has one for you. Spoiler: it’s not great. Families save an average of $15,000 by avoiding probate court with a trust. So yes, your future self is practically begging you to get this done.

Why Procrastination Costs More

Think estate planning can wait? Think again. Probate processes take an average of 18 months and cost 5% of an estate’s value.  And let’s not forget the emotional toll on your family. Nobody wants their loved ones embroiled in courtroom drama when they should be mourning or—let’s be real—fighting over your vinyl collection.

Consider two families: one with a solid estate plan and another without. Family A quickly accesses their inheritance, funds a grandkid’s education, and maybe takes a Disney trip. Family B spends months in probate, losing time and money. Who do you want to be?

Conclusion

Estate planning isn’t just for “older” adults or the ultra-wealthy. The truth is, it’s for anyone who values their family’s financial future. Don’t let procrastination be your legacy. Take the first step today to ensure your loved ones avoid unnecessary stress—and maybe even get to keep your collection of artisan coffee mugs.

Contact Gaughan & Connealy today to make a plan that works for you and your family. After all, you deserve peace of mind. Your future self will thank you.
